Context

On a narrow urban site in Kyoto, the question was how to make room for stillness. A continuous perimeter wall mediates between the rhythm of the street and a slower domestic world within. Existing trees, prevailing winds and the changing angle of the sun became the first lines of the plan.

Concept

Rather than a single object, Sora is a sequence of rooms around an open heart. The garden is encountered from different heights and distances. A sheltered threshold slows arrival; a low corridor opens into a generous shared room. Each transition makes the everyday feel considered.

Material

Pale mineral plaster, honed stone and gently brushed oak form a limited palette. Junctions are quiet and surfaces are left close to their natural state. The house is designed to gather traces of occupation rather than resist them.

Light

Deep reveals soften the brightness of the courtyard. A narrow rooflight marks the passage of the afternoon across a textured wall. The lighting strategy begins with daylight and adds only what is needed after dusk.

Living

The plan accommodates both solitude and gathering. Sliding timber screens allow the ground floor to become a series of intimate rooms or one continuous living space. The garden remains a shared point of orientation in every season.
